South Africa has a high UV index, so we must take extra precautions to protect our skin from harmful UV rays. Here are some useful tips to help prevent damage and maintain healthy-looking skin.
Use sunscreen. Sunscreen should have a high SPF (sun protecting factor) of at least 30. You should reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you are swimming or sweating outdoors.
Drink plenty of water. Not only will this keep your skin healthy from the inside out, but staying hydrated during the hot summer days is essential.
Wear protective clothing – wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and light-weight, long-sleeved shirts to protect your skin.
Seek shade – avoid direct sun exposure when the sun is at its hottest.
Use after-sun lotions and soothing skincare products on skin that has been exposed to the sun. If you are sunburnt, avoid the sun until your skin has recovered.
Use make-up with an SPF and a light-weight moisturiser to help keep your skin moisturised.
