Take care of your kidneys

Kidneys are vital to our overall well-being. They help remove waste products and excess fluids from our body (through urine) and return vitamins, amino acids, and other vital substances to our bloodstream.

Here are some tips to help keep your kidneys happy and healthy:

  1. Let a medical professional test your kidneys – especially if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, are obese, have a family history of kidney disease, have kidney problems (such as kidney failure and frequent kidney stones), or are older than 60.
  2. Drink lots of fluids and make water your go-to drink.
  3. Exercise regularly.
  4. Manage your blood sugar levels – people with diabetes are at greater risk.
  5. Stop smoking and limit your alcohol intake.
  6. Monitor your blood pressure, as high blood pressure can cause kidney damage.
  7. Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight.
  8. Try to eat less salt – use fresh herbs and spices to add flavour.
